Solar street lights are raised off-grid solar plants which convert solar energy into electricity to run a bulb or LED mounted on a pole. They have battery backup which can be sized according to the needs.

These come in various configurations such as:

  • With separate LED, battery and inverter
  • With LED and battery in-built in one box and an inverter
  • With all three components in same unit
  • With LED and inverter in-built in one box and battery

Consumer can choose one of these according to their needs.

Components of Solar Street Light System

The major components of this arrangement are described below:

Solar Panels

Solar panels are semiconductor devices which convert sunlight into direct-current (DC) electricity. These are connected either in series or in parallel to add up voltage and current respectively depending on the requirement/designing of the solar plant.

These are long life devices and the warranties provided by the companies are of 25 years. They may well exceed their warranty life in most cases.

Solar panels require very low maintenance as only periodic washing needs to be done. Period of washing varies from location to location but can generally be taken as once in two weeks.

Inverter

Inverter is an electrical device which converts DC electricity from panels into AC electricity to be used by various appliances in homes, factories etc.

These devices have very high efficiency, generally more than 95%. Manufacturer’s generally provide a warranty of 5 years.

Luminary

Luminary is the light bulb or LED which is to be used in the solar street light. Now-a-days various configurations of luminaries are available. Luminaries with built-in both inverter and battery (Li-ion) or only built-in inverter are available in the market. This not only reduces the weight on the pole but makes the system simpler. These days, LED luminaries are preferred over bulbs for its longevity and low power consumption and hence, longer backup.

Now-a-days, these luminaries have automatic light sensors which power on the luminary automatically as soon as the ambient light reduces below a threshold.

Battery

Batteries are storage devices that store charge to be used in times when there is no generation of electricity.

Luminaries run on batteries at night which are charged during the day.

The sizing of the batteries can be done according to the necessity of backup required and the capacity of luminary on which it is to be used.

Mounting Pole

Being a street light, pole is necessary so that light spreads across the area.

The poles need to be strong and capable enough to withstand luminary, solar panel and battery’s load. However, there are various designs of solar street lights available and how much weight will be loaded on the pole depends on both the design of street light and its capacity. It should also withstand various seasons, be it, summer, winter and monsoon without getting degraded.

The length of pole depends on the height required for solar street light. This depends on the personal requirement. The poles length can vary from 3 meters to 15 meters.

Cables

These are wires through which different components of the solar system are connected with each other.

Working

Solar Panels covert sun’s energy into electricity which charges the batteries during the day. The charge gets stored into the batteries to be used during night. At night, the charge stored in the batteries light the luminaries and gets recharged the following day to be used in the following night.

Many configurations of street lights can be possible:

  • With single inverter for many street lights
  • With DC Luminary
  • With AC Luminary
